The Development and Methodology of Electoral Geography: A Study in Political Geography

Auther : Jasem Karam

The paper aims to verify the close relationship between electoral geography and political geography, as the expansion of interest in the geography of elections over the last few decades has led to its involvement with various other disciplines, such as sociology and political science. The paper reviews the methodology and development of electoral geography, and examines its importance, which lies in the ability to study and analyze the electoral process in democracies. The author argues that electoral geography has added much to the field of political geography and indeed is an integral part of it, electoral patterns and voting behavior have added a new dimension to the field, and electoral data can provide a variety of analyses relevant to political geography. However, electoral geography should be capable of revealing more than aggregate voting decisions, and geographers should seek approaches and models which will demonstrate the connection between the environment and voting behavior.
