A Cost and Benefit Analysis of a Mail Survey to Retailers in Kuwait

Auther : EL-Sayed A. Nagy

The purpose of the study is to determine the effect of incentives and follow-up techniques on the response to a mail survey. The survey was sent to a sample of 900 retailers in Kuwait, who were divided into 12 control and experimental groups. Two sets of independent factors were tested:  1) monetary and non-monetary incentives; and  2) follow-up techniques (postcard and telephone). The impact of the two factors on the rate, quality and cost of response was investigated.

The results showed that incentives had no effect on the rate and quality of response. Personifications by telephone was found to be the most effective technique, producing a higher rate and quality of response at a lower cost.
