The Relationship Between Self-Esteem, Anxiety and School Achievement

Auther : Ali Shuaib

A hypothetical model was tested for the relationship between self-esteem, anxity and school achievement. The samples were 148 male and 144 female students in the final year of preparatory schools in Makkah Almukarramah. Anxiety was measured using the Casatanida Manifest Anxiety Scale, while self-esteem was measured by the Self-Esteem Inventory of Ronald Schnee. School achievement was estimated by the total score in the final examination of the first term of the school year  1405-06 H.

The results of t-test analysis revealed significant differences in anxiety, showing that were more anxious than males. One-way ANOVA showed no significant differences between male and female students in self-esteem. Path-analysis for testing the hypothetical model showed that two of the self-esteem components had no causal effects on school achievement, while anxiety had a negative effect on achievement.
