Influence of the Candidates’ Programs over Parliamentary Election Results: The Case of Jordan

Auther : Ahmad Nofal

This is a research study on the relationship between the items suggested in the candidates’ election programs and the election results. It is based on an analysis of the election programs of  100 candidates at the subsidiary parliament elections in Jordan. The program items were divided into economic, internal and external policies, and social policies. The most important issue, common to all programs, was the demand for the development of the relationship with the Palestine Liberation Organization, and for its support. Nevertheless, most of the successful candidates did not mention this issue, concentrated on other points specific to their respective programs. They generally excluded the subjects which were dealt with in the majority of the election campaigns.

The author concludes that there is no relationship between the items mentioned in the candidates’ programs and the results of the elections. It appears that other factors, such as religion, tribe, power and status have a greater influence over the election results than the candidates programs.
