The self and the other as seen by Palestinian youth

Auther : Mohmoud Mi,ari

This research studies the images and stereotypes which Palestinian youth hold about themselves and relevant others (the Palestine, the Arab, and Israel Jew). The data of this survey   were collected in 1994, by structured questioners. On a systemic random sample of 496 students from Birzeit University in Palestine. The image of a person was measured by questions about the extent to which that person is seen as courageous, rational and aggressive by the respondent. The findings show that the image of the self is the most positive flowed, in order by the image of the Palestinian, and then the Arab , and the least positive is that of Israeli Jew. While Palestinians from different territories have better images than others (other Arabs and Israeli Jews) their images are not exactly the same. Palestinians from the west bank and Gaza strip have a better image than those living in Israel. This finding maybe explained by the fact, that the Oslo agreement, signed in 1993 by the Israeli government and the Palestine liberation organization, excluded the Palestinians In Israel from being a part of the Palestinian problem, and the Palestinian leader ship has recognized them as Israeli citizens whose political destination is tied with Israel and not with the Palestinian people. As for Israeli Jews. Their image, although the least positive, is not completely negative but rather tends to be moderate. It is clear that Jews image among Palestinians is that Palestinians are less prejudiced against Israeli Jews are Against Palestinians.
