The Jews of India and their Emigration to Palestine

Auther : Abdul-Malek Al-Tamemy

Little is know about the Jews of India and their emigration to Palestine. They form three groups: the Cochin, the Beni Israel, and the Baghdadies. The oldest of these groups is the Cochin, Which claims that it has been existing in India since the 10th century. They were driven out from China, and the Middle East countries. The motives of their emigration were religious, political and economic. The Indian Jews relation with the Zionist movement started during the British colonial period in India and Palestine, when the British authorities encouraged Jewish emigration to Palestine. The aim of this study is to draw attention to the Jews of India and their emigration to Palestine, with emphasis on the British role in helping and encouraging these Jews to emigrate especially during the British mandate to Palestine.
