Arab Unity in the Nationalist Thought of the Arab East, 1860 – 1963

Auther : Mostafa Abboud

This article traces the evolution of the concept of Arab unity in the stream of nationalist thought, which prevailed in the Arab East between 1860 and 1963.

The study covers three major and distinct historical phases. The preliminary phase, Which lasted until the end of World War   l ‌‌‌‌‌, witnessed the emergence and systematic development of this concept. Al-Kuwakbi by his pioneering ideas and interpretations laid the foundation of this brand of nationalist thought. During the second and intermediary phase which continued until the end of World War ║, this concept gained strength due to the writings  of two outstanding Arab thinkers: Qostantin Zuraik and Sati AL-Husari. The third phase, which covered the period between 1945 and 1963, was truly historical because of the revolutionary changes that were taking place in the Arab East. The aim of Arab unity was cherished by three new and influential political movements, namely: Hasserism, the Ba’ath Party, and the Arab Nationalist Movement. Each one of theses movements had its own philosophical perspective, as well as its particular strategy of action.

The study concludes by ascertaining the prime need for co-ordinations Arab efforts in order to manage a collective struggle against the alliance of imperialism and the principal antagonists of Arab unity. The author considers this as an essential pre-requisite if the aim of Arab unity is ever to be attained.
