Communication Skill as a Function of Cognitive Level

Auther : Mohamed Rifky Eassa

This paper explores the relationship between communicative skill and cognitive level. Eighty four children from three different educational levels (kindergarten, and first and fourth elementary grades) were selected and matched according to their cognitive level. They were asked in pairs to play a matching game, during the course of which some were required to develop names to refer to unique graphic figures. The number of mistakes made in matching was considered the criterion for communicative skill.

The one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed that cognitive level has a significant effect in determining communicative skill (P < 0,0001). Other variables, such as age and educational level, were found significant only if they were contained in the main variable. Sex was found non significant in all statistical analyses. The limitations of the study are stated, and the paper ends with a discussion of the conclusions.
