The Effect of Question Design and Non-monetary Incentives on the Rate and Quality of Response to the Mail Survey: An Experimental Study

Auther : El-Sayed A. Nagy

The theory of the mail survey is incomplete, and researchers are still attempting to increase the validity of this method of collecting data. The objective of this research is to increase the effectiveness of the mailed questionnaire at a lower cost.

The research investigates the influence of two important factors which have not been previously studied, namely the rate and quality of response of the mailed survey. The results reveal that fixed alternative questions together with a promise of advice produce high rate of response, compared with open-ended or a mixture of open-ended and fixed alternative questions. It also shows that the type of questions or the incentive does not affect the quality of response.
