New Themes of Israeli Propaganda in the United States

Auther : Mohamad A. Rabie

Since the establishment of the Zionist movement some 90 years ago, its propaganda machine has sought to legitimize the Zionist claim to a Jewish homeland in Palestine. In an attempt to create a receptive world audience it tended to emphasize the positive aspects of Jewish life, experience and religion, and the contribution they have made to Western culture. It also began to expose what were thought to be the negative aspects of Arab life and the Islamic religion and culture. While many themes were employed, the claim that Jews had a religious, historical and legal right to live in Palestine and that Israel is the only Western-orientated democracy in the Middle East were the main themes articulated by the Israeli propaganda and echoed in the Western media.

However, the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, Gaza, the Gallon Heights and Sinai in 1967 exposed many of Israel’s false allegations and demonstrated its ability to act as an occupying military power. Propaganda themes, as a result, have had to be modified in order to meet the changing demands and needs of a new are in the history of the Jewish state. Among the new themes are those that claim that the Jewish population of Palestine has never been interrupted throughout history and that Jews have always maintained their prominence there. Because the Jewish state has become very dependent American military and economic aid for survival, its propaganda machine has begun to claim that Israel is the only dependable American ally in the Middle East. Books, pamphlets and newsletters are being regularly published to convince Americans that aid to Israel is an investment in their future. Western economic and strategic interests in the Middle East in general, and in the Gulf in particular, it claims, can only be protected and enhanced through the maintenance of a strong Israel.
