Development and Education: The Teaching of Sociology in Institutions of Higher Education in Morocco

Auther : Said Ben-Said

The aim of this paper is to draw attention to the following issue:

Sociology today plays a vital role in the socio-economic life of developed counties, and there seems to be an intimate relationship between the development of sociology as a science and the development of the social and professional sectors that constitute the object of study of sociology. It seems then that science has an important role to play in the struggle for development in the Arab world.

Dealing with this issue is certainly beyond the scope of the present paper, which constitutes a report on some preliminary fieldwork carried out during the academic year 1981-1982. Our objective here is rather to make the Arab reader aware of the issue thorough an examination of the case of morocco as far as education and training are concerned.

We have thus examined the syllabi and methods used in teaching sociology in six of the most important institutions of higher education in Morocco (Faculty of Law, Faculty of letters, the School of Agronomy and Veterinary Science, the School and Applied Economics, the School of Journalism, and the School of Social Work).

Our aim was to evaluate the content and validity of the sociology courses in these institutions and to compare them to the stated training objectives of the Schools.

We believe that what stands out as the result of this work is the discovery of a huge discrepancy between the great amount of interest that was paid to socilogy by the French colonizers who wanted to reinforce their domination of the country, and the very little importance that is given to the subject in independent Morocco as it is revealed by the trivial sociological training offered by institutions of higher education.
