The Role of the University of Jordan in Promoting Student Attitudes Towards Modernity

Auther : Omar El-sheikh , Jehad Sulaibi

The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of the University of Jordan on Student attitudes toward modernity. Modernity attitudes are defined as that set of interrelated attitudes that guide student social interactions and determine their way of acting, perceiving and valuing. Two stratified random samples were selected from the population of first and forth year students in the University of Jordan. The two samples were then tested for their equivalence on sex, levels of parent’s education and placed of residence during childhood using the X2 test. The scale used to measure student’s attitudes towards modernity was an adapted version of the scale that was constructed by linkers and smith, and consisted of 57 multiple choice items measuring nineteen attitudes. The scale was logically and empirically validated and its reliability was established using KR-20. The mean scores of first and four year students divided by area of specialization (college) were analyzed using the two-way analysis of variance. Post hoc comparisons among means were also made using Scheffe’test. The study revealed overall significant differences between the mean scores of first and fourth year students.

However it was also found that the difference between the mean scores of first and fourth year students varied across area of specialization. Moreover the difference was found also to vary across modernity attitudes.
