A Comparative study of Kuwaiti students with defective vision and those with normal visual acuity in terms of social maturity, learning aptitude and intelligence

Auther : Salwa Mulla / Omniya Amin

Defective vision is considered as one of the most important to which the society gives great concern . According to the internationally acceptable definition of blindness by the WHO ( Geneva 1977) , severity of visual impairment is classified into five categories of which low vision lies in groups one and two. The selected patients were cases whose visual acuity after the best possible correction lies between 6/24 and not less than 3/60 in the better eye. They were 40 students with limited vision (20 males and 20 females). Ranging from 6-12 years of age. The control group consisted of 40 normally sighted students (20 males and 20 females) within the same range of age. The study was intended to test the following hypotheses:

1-      Students with defective vision differ from the normally sighted in social maturity , learning aptitude and intelligence.

2-      Students whose defective vision could be partially corrected with medical spectacles differ from students whose vision was impossible to correct with glasses in terms of social maturity, learning  aptitude and intelligence.

3-      Males with defective vision differ from females with the same defect in terms of social maturity, learning aptitude and intelligence as compared with normally sighted cases. The main tools used in this study were 1- Vineland; the social maturity scale. 2- Hiskey Nebraska for learning aptitude. 3- Wisckler test of intelligence. The data collected were statistically analyzed and the above-mentioned hypotheses were confirmed.
