Kuwait Political Rise and Iraq’s Allegations

Auther : Abdullah AL –Eniezi

This study traces the political rise of Kuwait , the development of its ruling system , and its relationship with both Britain and the Ottoman empire. Since its establishment , Kuwait’s ties with Ottoman empire were nominal . its relationship with Britain goes back to the early emergence of the British power and trade activity in the Gulf area . in 1899, an agreement deeming Kuwait- with its present boundaries- a British protectorate was signed by both Britain and Kuwait . in 1913 , the Ottoman government recognized this pact , which was officially announced in 1914 by Britain . the paper also highlights the various phases of the progression of the ruling system in Kuwait , from a traditional tribal system to a constitution following Kuwait’s independence in 1961. although Kuwait’s geographic boundaries were officially recognized by Iraq in 1932, the relationship between both countries has been marred by a series of political crises , namely in 1938, 1958, 1961, 1972 and 1990. these crises were due to Iraq’s wrongful allegations that Kuwait was geographically part of Basra . However, the real reasons behind these crises were difficult economics situation of Iraq , its expansionist aspirations, its need for a geographically strategic location , and its political instability .
