Claude Levi –Strauss and the kinship theory: reading in modern anthropology

Auther : Abdullla A Yateem

Ever since his emergence as an anthropologist after the second world war, Claude Levi –Strauss has continued to make remarkable contributions to anthropological theory and philosophy. However , among his fellow Arab anthropologists, Levi –Strauss is still foreign , particularly when compared with literary critics. This article tries to establish , firstly , a critique of the anthropological practice of structural functionalists in the Arab world which have by and large , ignored his theories ; then moves , to highlight one of the major domains in which  Levi –Strauss has made his main contribution , that is the realm of kinship theory . the article concludes that Levi –Strauss theory, of what is known today as structural anthropology , is still substantially important in the kinship domain , a territory that is still affecting most societies and cultures of the Arab world .
