Technology Transfer in the Egyptian Pharmaceutical Sector : A case study

This study attempts to present the economic and social impacts of the technology transfer to the Egyptian pharmaceutical sector . the structure of the Egyptian pharmaceutical sector is described as consisting of the following three types of companies: a) public sector companies. b) private joint venture companies ;and c) companies established under the investment law. The study presents in the first chapter the development of the pharmaceutical industry in Egypt through the development of local production , imports , exports , ostensible consumption and per capita consumption of pharmaceuticals. The second chapter discusses the legal framework of the transfer of technology in the Egyptian Pharmaceutical sector. This frame work includes two types of contracts , the first is compulsory for the public sector’s companies , while the other is for the companies under the investment law. The third chapter deals with the economic and social impacts of the technology transferred in the Egyptian pharmaceutical sector .  the study reached the following conclusions:1) the foreign transferred technology had a positive impact by increasing the local pharmaceutical production which presently provides for more than 85% of the local consumption . 2) the technology transferred has a positive effects on forward linkages and negative effects on backward linkages.
