Towards A New Technique in Teaching Chemistry

Auther : Abdullah El-Farra

It is well established that students in secondary schools level and even university level have problems in the understanding of the diagrammatic representation of the elementary operations of stereochemistry such as Rotation, Reflection, Inversion...etc. This learning disability strongly affects their academic progress and later will prevent them from studying any fields related to under standing spatial relationships such as engineering biochemistry...Etc. The study investigates the probability of using a new teaching to improve students ability on understanding the three dimensional diagrams of reflection carried on the basic forms of the chemical structures. Nine self-learning programmers based upon the use of the Lab Dissolve projector technique were devised to teach mental reflection carried on eighteen chemical structures. Ten theoretical steps were proposed to indicate the reflection operation starting from a particular viewpoint of three (Step 10). The lap Dissolve Projector consists of two slide projectors linked to a variable dissolve remote control unit by which it is possible to control the slide change from one projector to another. In fact, this technique offers flexibility in the speed of intervals and dissolves. In the current study the interval, times were 5, 7.5 and 10 second. Dissolves periods were selected to be in the range of 3, 4 and 5 seconds. The research was directed to answer the following questions:

1-Does the use of the Lap Dissolve technique improve the students potential ability in understanding the diagrammatic representation of reflection carried on the three dimensional structures ?

2-Does the changing of Intervals and dissolves exposure times in the range of the experiment contributor significantly to the performance on the Reflection Test?

3-If we want to teach mental, reflect on by this educational instrument, what is the best reaction time for the student to respond correctly?
