Urbanization, Family Structure & Family-Kin Relationships in the Arab world: A Review & Evaluation of Research Findings

Auther : Fhaed T. AL-Thakedb

Sociologists of the family have arrived at conflicting conclusions about family structure & family-kin relationships in the Arab world. One group of sociologists describes it as large and extended, while others maintain that limited resources and short life expectancies have always mitigated against the existence of such families. Also, some observers argue in terms of rural-urban differentials. That is agreement of family-sociologists also extends to the impact of urbanization of family-kin relationships in the Arab world. Competing perspectives such as these make the search for empirical evidence a necessity.

The objective of this paper is to empirically demonstrate that in the majority of Arab societies:

(1)                 Nuclear families are not only prevalent, but they are also the most preferred form.

(2)                 Traditional family-kin relationships remain strong.

The influence of urbanization & westernization of the family has been confined to a small segment of the population.
