Impact of Research on Educational Policies and Decisions

Auther : M.Bakri

This study investigates the claim that the impact of educational researcher on educational policy decisions in minimal. A central thesis of the study denounces such a claim as not adequately justified. Investigating the variables involved in the claim the author spells out the confounded assumption and shows that research does affect policy decision. Though educational research has an impact on educational policy decision, the direction and the magnitude of the impact is determined by the informational needs of policy-makers and the particular style of decision-making they follow. The moral of the study is that the impact of research should be seen as a reformulation of policy and as providing a sensitizing effect on policy-markers, rather than providing formidable, solutions to policy problems. Factors detracting from greater impact of research on policy-decisions are embedded in a gap created by differing perspectives of researchers and policy-makers. A better quality of future educational policy decisions and like wise a greater impact of research on such decisions, rests on the phenomenon of a widening perspective, or the use of multiple perspectives.
