The Arab Gulf: A study in Economics and Social History

Auther : A.Al-Tamimi

Much of the emphasis of this study is on economic and social aspects of the Arabian Gulf region. Before the advent of the oil industry, pearling and trade were the most valuable sources of economic activity in the region. The pearling industry did, however, have favorable effects on the life of the society at that time. Since 1950’s oil has brought fundamental change in the economic and social structure. Despite the fact that oil remains the largest single economic activity the region has relied on, commerce has also played an important part. There is a considerable opportunity for real development in various fields, but tribal thought has hindered such development. The economic and social achievements apparently seem remarkable but its realty shows that they will not have influenced the future positively; hence considerable efforts should have been made to develop the region by rebuilding the society economically and socially. Securing future income can be accomplished by investing the oil money inside the region and in the underdevelopment countries. The study also dealt with the impact of immigration on the population structure in the Gulf which has been enormous. There has been a negative social, economic and cultural impact of the non-Arabs on the Arabian Gulf society.
