THE LEAGUE OF ARAB STATES AND THE GULF CRISIS

Auther : Ahmed EL-Rashidy

The present study deals with the role played by the League regarding the Gulf crisis. The study is divided into three sections. The first section analyzes the legal system governing the League’s function in the field of settling inter-Arab disputes. The second section treats the endeavors made by the league towards the crisis and putting an end to the Iraqi occupation of Kuwait. As to the last section, it evaluates the role performed by the league towards the settlement of the Gulf crisis.

The two main conclusions reached by the study are the following:

Firstly, the aggression waged by Iraq against Kuwait has constituted a flagrant breach of the rules of public international law as well as of the Arab Legal instruments such as the League’s Charter and the Treaty of Arab Joint Defense of 1950. Secondly, the Arab League has failed to reach a peaceful solution of the Gulf crisis particularly as compared with the role of the U.N. in this regard.
