The Development of Political Identity of the Palestinians in Israel

Auther : Mahmoud Mi’ari

This paper suggests that political identity of the Palestinian in Israel has changed from being predominantly Israeli-Arab, after the establishment of Israel, into predominantly Arab, after the June War of 1967, and again into predominantly Palestinian-Arab, after the October War of 1973.

After the war of 1948 the Palestinians who remained in Israel were demoralized, Leaderless and isolated from the Arab world. Accepting the new reality and willing to assimilate within Israeli society, the Palestinian Arabs in Israel tended to define themselves during the first and second decades of the establishment of Israel as Israeli-Arab. In the late sixties, after the abolition of the military government in 1966 and the Arab Israeli war of June 1967, social contact and interaction have increased among the Arabs in Israel and between them and the other Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. As result, Arab identity became predominant and Palestinian identity had revived after 1967. In the last decade several developments have occurred: the international recognition of the Palestinians ‘ right to self-determination ‘  Israel’s aggression against the Palestinians especially in Lebanon and the massacres of Palestinians at the hands of some Arabs. These developments, in addition to other internal developments, have strongly intensified Palestinian identity among Palestinian Arabs in Israel after October war of 1973.
