The Concept of Attitude in the Psychological and Social Sciences

Auther : M.S.Adam

Attitude is one of the basic concepts in behavioural sciences: especially in psychology and sociology .This paper tries not only to determine a theoretical and operational framework for this concept but to apply inan empirical study on the Liberalism-Conservatism Attitude among some groups of Egyptian works and farmers. The article surveys the historical background of the concept, discussing the well-known definitions, and the auther proposes the following global definition: Attitude is a psycho-social concept. It is one of the hypothetical constructs, or mediating variables, which are never directly observed in behavior: but can be inferred through the consistency of personal responses, favorable or unfavorable, towards the psychosocial debatable issues or statements. Thus, the matter of attitude is necessary in situations demanding determined personal, social and ideological choices from the individual and denotes the wholly affectional, cognitional and conational experience of the individual.
