Personality Characteristics of Effective and Ineffective Counselors

Counselor’s Personality is considered to be an important variable in the effectiveness of counseling process. This process is in fact, a relationship between two personalities: the counselor’s personality on one side, and the client’s personality on the other. Many people working in counseling (Rogers, 1942: Arbuckle, 1954; Weitz, 1957; Patterson, 1062; and Moser, 1963) have emphasized the importance of the importance of the counselor’s personality as an effective and important factor in the success of the counseling process.

This study is attempting to answer two questions:-

1)      What are the personality characteristics that are related to counselor effectiveness in Jordan?

2)      Do male counselor’s differ from female counselors on these characteristics?

Cattle  16  PF personality test modified to the Jordanian environment (Kara’en 1980) was used as well a test of counselor’s effectiveness constructed for the purpose of this study based on the ratings of counseling supervisors.

The results of  30  effective counselors and 30 ineffective counselors on the Cattle 16  PF test were analyzed using (2  2) analysis of variance.

It was found that effective counselors differ significantly from ineffective counselors on five personality factors namely: Out going / reserved, Bright / Dull, calm / easily upset; Venturesome / shy, self sufficient / Group oriented.
