ARAB INVESTMENT ABROAD: HOW IT IS AND WHAT IT OUGHT TO BE

Auther : Zakaria A. Basha

As crude oil prices increased in the early 1970’s, oil receipts of the major Arab producing countries rose sharply and continued increasing the years later. Since then, these countries - mainly the Arab Gulf countries – started to adopt an investment strategy which has been aimed to diversify the sources of income to reduce the dominance of the oil sector. But, with too much oil revenues in hand, and with limited domestic absorptive capacities, Arab investments (private and Governments) had to move outside the local frontiers and were engaged in various investment activities.

The main purpose of this study is to evaluate the present state of Arab investments aboard. This evaluation includes the factors affecting and directing these investments, the kind of investment activities involved and the proportional distribution of these investments among the different host countries.

Our study, also examines the degree of efficiency of these investments, how successful it is and what would be the future structure and distribution of these investments in order to maximize the benefits of Arab investors and the whole Arab World as well.
