Factors Associated with Creativity in the Modern Arab Culture

Auther : Abdallarab M. Soliman

Arab intellectuals believe that is a crisis in the cultural development of the Arab countries. Social scientists have shown that cultural and scientific development is associated with the development of creativity. This paper attempts to find out to what extent factors associated with creativity are developed in the modern Arab culture. Noting that Arab countries are lagging in creative production an attempt is made to delineate some of the factors which may be responsible for the under development of creativity in the modern Arab culture. Specifically, the followings factors are discussed:

1. Lack of education. Recent statistics indicate that the percent of literacy in half of the Arab countries is less than 25.

2. The authoritarian nature of the Arab culture which was revealed in empirical rese4arch as well as in the observations and analyses of national and foreign researchers.

3. The socialization of children and youth which aims at teaching them to conform to adult standards and to obey authorities in the society.

4. lack of a positive image of the future.

5. lack of synergy in society.

The methodological limitations of this analysis were noted and a plea for the development of factors which encourage creativity in the Arab countries was made.
