The Major Component of International Negoiation: A Theoretical Perspective

Auther : Basel R. Khatib

The purpose of this study is to identify the main variable, which form or affect international negotiation. As an instrument for the adjustment of relations and resolution of disputes, negotiation has been subjected to rigorous scholarly scrutiny. Though this has often led to confusion and misconception. This study utilizes a descriptive analytical approach supported by historical data. The study evaluates the basic characteristics of negotiation: the link with conflict; the factors influencing its conduct; and the main components and attributes of the process of negotiation. The major findings indicate that differences between diplomatic and non-diplomatic negotiations exist, and although negotiations have been primarily used for conflict resolution, they often accomplish objectives only remotely connected with the issues at hand. Negotiations can serve many useful functions: they can define issues, formulate solutions and organize relationships. Moreover, regardless of the outcome, negotiation has been proven viable machinery for communication, and a better alternative than the use of force.
