Fun making in Islam

Auther : Prof. Hassan Abd Al-Ghany Abu Ghuddah

This paper aims at defining this term “fun” as a lexical item and as a term, and to mention the other relating terms in regard to their meaning and juristic ruling.

It also aims at surveying, collecting and discussing jurists’ opinions and proofs in regard to the ruling of fun making generally and of its results towards others.

The research indicated that fun making in Islam is of two kinds: Permitted and prohibited, and that jurists are of two opinions in regard to the original ruling of the lawful fun making: Some say it is recommended (مندوب), while others say it is permissible (مباح). This classification is based on the outlines, objectives, forms and conditions, indications and received patterns.

The paper also clarifies the effects of the fun maker’s behavior on marriage, divorce, raj’ah (restoring marriage life), contracts, monetary transactions and apostasy, in addition to what results in the areas of rights, commitments and penalties.

Likewise, the paper had to touch upon the normal and professional fun makers in the early Islamic eras with some examples of fun acts ascribed to Prophet (pbuh), his companions, and virtuous Muslims in the next generations.

The paper finally stressed the characteristics of Islam of tolerance and moderation in the social behavior with others provided that this act will make others happy, pleased and have a lovely smile on their lips , and in the same time pleases Allah, be Exalted.
