Studies Related to Tafsir (Interpretation) of the

Qur’an During the Republican Regime In Turkey 1923-1995

A General Review

Dr. Sulayman Mulla Ibrahim’ Ughlu

The attitude of turning towards the West and westernization, which wads, initiate the announcement of the new organizations (Tanzimat) 1839, asserted itself by the announcement of the Republic. As a result, Turkey underwent quick changes in the economic, political and cultural spheres which led to cultural, scientific and social upheavals and to weakness in the infrastructure. The religious sphere too suffered such changes which caused great tangible weakness in the essential Islamic disciplines.

While those West-oriented changes were going on, there were new alternative attempts to provide people with a new religious spirit and adherence to Islam in order to stop disregarding religion or keeping it static. It has become necessary to introduce Islam property to the new generations, an effort that started early in the Republican era.

In this period, Muslim scholars wrote their books in their living language, because the transformation from Arabic script to Latin script in addition to the wide changes introduced into the language made this version of Turkish differ greatly from the traditional Ottoman (Osmanli) one.

Shortly after the announcement of the Republic, all Islamic schools were banned and closed, leaving Turkey without any religious educational establishment. There was nobody in the country who knows Arabic well except the small minority of Arabic native speakers. These conditions had negative effects upon the discipline of the Qur’an interpretation in particular, as well as the Islamic studies in general. Finally, the young generations become unable to understand Arabic interpretations altogether.

These bad and static conditions lasted up to 1950. But after that the situation got improved when Islamic schools for Imams and khateebs (mosque leaders and preachers) as well as high Islamic institutes, were established, and people started to be increasingly interested in Islamic studies. After the 1980, many postgraduates on Islamic topics for M.A. and Ph.D. degress.

The early works of Qur’an interpretations accomplished in the Rupublican era, such as “khulasatul-Bayan” by shaikh Wahby Efendi”, ‘al-Ma’aal’al-Ali lil Qur’an ‘al-Karim” by Shaikh ‘Umar Nasuhi and” Khulasatut – Tafasir” by Shaikh ‘Ali’ Arsilan, were, were of traditional old type in this field and aimed at making the traditional heritage of Tafsir available to the young generations.

Laterm were of the accomplished new Tafssir works to meet, in methodology and topics, the needs of the modern age and to deal with the social and psychological issues and problems the new generation faces nowadays. Examples of these modern Tsfsir works are “adBeen’ ‘ al-Haq wa Lissan ‘al-Qur’an’ by Shaikh Muhammad Sulayman ‘Atsh….. and “Tafsir’ ‘ al’-Qur’an –‘al-Asri fi Daw’ al-“llm” by “Ustadh Halal Yeldrim. Together with this new trend, there were still some scholars following the old method in Tafsir who did not make due efforts to verify the authenticity of narrated statements or to avoid unnecessary, sometimes boring, details. The works of both Wahby Efendi and ‘Ali” Arsilan are examples of this type.
