Definite Proofs That the “Weak Tradition” before at-

Tirmidhi is not Equal to the “Good Tradition”

Dr. Nihab ‘Abdul-Haleem ‘Ubaid

There was a group of Islamists led by ‘lbn Taymiyyah, a grand Shaikh of Islam, claimed that to the former Hadithists (scholars of Hadith)- those who preceded the Hadithist Imam at-Tirmidhi- the Weak Tradition (al-hadith ad-Da’eef) used to have the authenticity level of the Good Tradition (al-hadith al-hassan) to the later Hadithists- from the time of Imam at-Tirmidhi and ahead.

They expressed that claim on the occasion of interpreting Imam ‘Ahmad’s statement that the Weak Tradition to him is better than opinion and than analogy provided there was neither a more authentic Tradition on the subject nor a Tradition that contradicts it. Those scholars understood Imam ‘Ahmad’s statement as indicating the Good Tradition not the Weak one, because Traditions used to be classified, in the former periods, into two categories only; Authentic (sahih) and Weak (Da’eef). Imam at-Tirmidhi was the first Hadithist to introduce the tertiary categorization.

The paper expounds with definite proofs that the point raised by those scholars was neither correct nor the fact, and that the term “Weak Tradition” used to have the same meaning to Hadithists, both predecessors and succesors.

The writer stated in this paper that eighteen scholars- before, and contemporary to, Imam at-Tirnidhi – used and were aware of, the term “the Good” (al-Hassan); he found also that “al-Hassan” used to have three different meanings:

  1. “the Rejected” (al-Munkar), and “the Strange” (al-Ghareeb),
  2. “the Acceptable” (al-Maqbool) which is lower than the Authentic, i.e. all levels of “the Good Tradition”
  3. “the Acceptable” which is originally “Weak”, but it was reinforced by another Tradition, equal or higher level.
