Disbursement of the Poor-due (Zakah) In a Place other than its

Original Home (ie. Where it is paid)

By Dr. Muhammad Uthman Shubair

The topic of taking away (Zakah) from its original home to spent in another area is one of the most important topics in the doctrine of “Zakah” or Welfare Contribution since it reflects the wise policy of the disbursement of the revenues of Zakah.

The present study reached to the following conclusions:

Originally the revenues of Zakah are distributed in the place where the forms of wealth that have been taxed exist, not the place of the paper of ‘Zakah’. However, it is permissible to take away the poor-due from its place of origin for acceptable legal food reasons and its taking away is regarded obligatory for the following:

    1. Taking it away to places where Muslims are fighting in the way of Allah (a,-Jihad)
    2. Taking it away to institutes engaged in the call (Dawah) for Islam educational and health institutes which it is appropriate to spend on from one of the eight heads of expenditure.
    3. Taking it away to countries where Muslims are suffering from starvation, famines and calamities.
    4. Taking it away to the prayer’s relatives who are entitled to “Zakah”

2- Disbursement of the poor-due in places other than its place of origin without an acceptable reason is undesirable. However, the enjoyed duty is not annulled.

3- The original place of ‘Zakah’ is any area with recognized boundaries. It does not matter how vast the area is.

    1. The original place of ‘Zakat al-Fitr is the place of its prayer since its purpose is the purification of the body of the prayer.
    2. Whatever is recommendable in taking “Zakah” away from its original place:

- In case of ‘Zakah’ on idle wealth it should be assessed and sent earlier enough (before a convenient period before the end of the year to reach the recipients before the end of the year.
