The Book “Durat at-Tanzil Waghurat at-Ta’wil” Can not be

Attributed to Ar-Raghib al-Asfahani

By: Dr. Ahmad Hassan Farahat

  • The mention of at-Raghib al-Asfahani, as the author of the book, on some copies of “Durat at –Tanzil Wa-Ghurat at Ta’wil’” is the result of confusing similar authors’ names and titles of their books. Hence this does not provide evidence for attributing the book to ar-Raghib.

  • What Asadis mentioned that “Durat at-Tanzil Ghurat at-Ta’wil’” is the same book ar-Raghib promised to write in his introduction to his book “Al-Mufradat” under the title “Tahqiq al ‘Alfaz al- Mutradifah’ is mere illusion which faced valid scientific criticism.

  • What is mentioned that ar-Raghib had a book named “Jami” at-Tafsir” ot aj-jami” fi at-Tafsit” has no evidence to support it. What is actually available in the name of al-Ragib of exegesies of the Qur’an is his manuscript under the title “Exegesies of the Glouries Qur’an’ (Tafsir al-Qur’an al-Azim).

  • The present study explains why “Durat at-Tanzil” cannot be attributed to a number of writers. It explains that it cannot be attributed to al-khatib or al-lskafi or al-Fakhr ar-Razi or lbn Fork.

  • The main point relied upon in refuting the opinion that “Durat at-Tanzi” can not be attributed to ar-Raghib is the mention of “Jami” at-Tafsir” or al-Jami” fi at-Tafsir” in the interpretation os Surat al-Kafirun in “Durat at-Tanzil”. Also, this title belongs to a book written by Abu al-Qasim ibn al-Fadi al-‘Asfahani, the called “Qiwam as-Sunnah” who dies in 535 A.H. This fact is confirmed by the compatability of what mentioned in the introduction of “Durat at-Tanzil” and what is known of the biography of Abu al-Qasim Ismail as well as the similarities in the style of the introduction of “Durat at-Tanzil” and the introductions of Abu al-Qasim Isma’ils’s books which we had access to. All these provided us with evidence that “Durat at-Tanzil” can rightly be attributed to Abu al-Qasim Isma’il ibn Muhammad ibn al-Fadi Al’Asfahani.

  • Attributing the book, as it is in some manuscripts, to ar-Raghib was due to similarly in most of the names and surnames of ar-Raghib and the true author of the book. Ar-Raghib’s full name is Abu al-Qasim al-Hussain ibn Muhammad ibn al-Mufadal al-Asfahani and the true author’s name was said to be: Abu al-Qasim Ismail ibn Muhammad ibn al-Fadk al-Asfahani. Their names differ only in the first name, but the middle names and surnames are similar.

  • This study discloses the mistakes and illusions of the researcher in forming his opinion about the age of ar-Raghib and the year in which he died, which belong he thought it to be 406A.H.
