The Real Meaning of “Al-Mushabbahat”(Doubtful matters) in the Hadith: “ Al-Halalu Bayyin wa Al-Haramu Bayyin…” and the Stand of Muslim Towards Them.

Auther : Dr. Sa’d Muhammad Muhammad Al-Skaykh

  1. The two great Imams of Hadith: Al-Bukhari and Muslim as well as other Hadith scholars reported the Hadith of “Al-Mushabbahat” It is one of four fundamental Hadiths that contain great basics of Islam in the areas of faith, behavior, morals and heart.

  2. “Mushabbahat” are those matters which are not clear concerning lawfulness and prohibition due to conflict of evidences, meanings and causes.

  3. There are several reasons for doubtfulness such as doubting the source of legalizing or prohibition, mixing of the lawful and the prohibited, having difficulty in distinguishing either, conflict of evidences and scholars disagreement.

  4. In front of “mushabbahat”, people are two groups: Those who find matters doubtful and avoid them to keep their religion and honor safe, and those who indulge in them in spite of doubtfulness and thus driving towards the area of prohibition!!

  5. The perfect level of “ wara‘ ” (piety) is to avoid doubtful matters according to Prophet’s Hadiths: The one discussed here and to the Hadiths: “ Leave that which makes you doubt for that which does not make you doubt.” and “ Good is tranquility and evil is doubt.” , …

  6. Heart is the most important organ in human being; if it be whole, all the body is whole, and if it be diseased all of it is diseased. The wholeness of the heart is achieved by knowing Allah, the rulings of the Sharia, commitment and sensitivity to goodness and keeping away from evil and doubtful matters.
