Judging the Authenticity of Prophetic Traditions According to

Auther : Dr. Yasir Ahmad Ash-Shamali

Due to the great status the two Imams, Al-Bukhari and Muslim, had, and to their strict verification of the authenticity of the Prophetic Traditions, scholars of this discipline, in judging any Tradition, used to say that it is authentic according to the conditions of Al-Bukhari, Muslim, or both of them. The task of this paper is to accurately explain the methods adopted by Al-Bukhari and Muslim for judging the authenticity of Prophetic Traditions and, hence explain what is really meant by scholars’ statement that a certain Tradition is “ authentic according to the conditions of Al-Bukhari and Muslim.”

This paper clarified that Al-Bukhari had explicitly required confirmed actual meeting between the narrator and his source, while Imam Muslim had required only the possibility of such meeting. There are other conditions of the two Imams, such as: - The narrator must be known for his interest in seeking Traditions, and belongs, himself and his source, to the first class of narrators known for their good memorization and companionship with their sources. While Imam Muslim accepts Traditions of all narrators belonging to the second class who had accompanied their sources for a short period, Al-Bukhari accepts only some of them.

- When the trustworthy narrator singularly relates a Tradition not related by other abundant narrators, both Imams do investigate his accuracy and abundance of narration and whether his singularity is acceptable or not.

This paper has also clarified that Tradition scholars’ phrase:, “ Sound according to al-Shaykhayn”, means that their narrators are authorized by the two Imams in their two “Sahih”(sound) books of Traditions in addition to taking into consideration other conditions such as being free from nonconformity (شذوذ) and defect (علة). The researcher drew the attention to Al-Hakim and others’ leniency in judging Tradition according to conditions of Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

The paper likewise studied the dispute among scholars on Al-Hakim’s statements such as: “Sound according Al-Bukhari’s conditions”, whether the meaning is that the Tradition’s narrators were authorized by Al-Bukhari or they are just similar to those authorized by him in accuracy and integrity. The paper supports the first interpretation which is the view of the majority of scholars against the other interpretation of Al-Iraqi and Al-San‘ani.
