The Term “Hadith Hasan” between Theory and Application

All Praise is due to Allah, the Lord of worlds, and His Blessings and Mercy be upon the noblest Prophet Muhammad and upon all of his household and companions.

 

Some of the research areas of Hadith science ( ‘Ilm of Mustalah Al-Hadith) needs more attention from scholars, particularly the cases of application by modern scholars, because the process of application requires employing a group of the rules of Hadith science, of Ususl of Al-Fiqh and of Fiqh in addition to linguistic ones and thorough knowledge of Muhadditheen’s methodologies as well other rules.

 

One of these areas is the category of Hadith labeled “Al-Hasan”. Firstly, some scholars differed in defining it; some considered it among “Dha’eef (weak) group, others put it in “Saheeh” group, while a third group did not distinguish it from “Saheeh”. They also differed when they applied this term to actual Hadiths. Lacking of efficient knowledge about the differences between these definitions and their conditions led some researchers to use them in the same way. This resulted in lots of confusion, contradictions, and to come up in many cases with inaccurate results. Some of researchers even dared to accuse previous scholars of illusion, inattention and contradiction. All these defects led me to write on this topic and to do justice to our preceding scholars.

 

In my research I came up with the following results which I see important and useful:

 

-         The predecessors did not differentiate clearly between Al-Hasan and Al-Da’eef as did the late ones who put in a category between Al-Saheeh and Al-Da’eef.

-         The predecessors used to use Al-Hasan with different meanings: the linguistic meaning, the Weak supported, Al-Hasan lidhatih and Al-Hasan lighayrih.

-         Judging a Hadith is not done only through mere investigating the level of the chain of transmitters in one of the references such as “Al-Taqreeb”, but, in many cases, it is necessary to investigate other narrations of the same transmitter as well as the opinions of the critics about him.

-         It is also necessary to be careful when we look into the accounts of the scholars of Jarh and ta’de
