Development of a personal lucus of control scale: An investigation of the Construct Validity and Reliability

Auther : Amer H. Yaser & Khalaf N. AL-Tuhaiti

The purpose of the study was to develop a personal locus of control scale instead of the traditional locus of control scale, because it is difficult to differentiate between that is social, individual and fatalistic in our society and in such a personality variable. In order to investigate the validity of the scale which was built by using certain items from Rotter’s original scale, and other scales that were derived from it, individual differences between internals and externals in cognitive activity, success and failure expectancies, performance confidence, and attribution of success were studied. The results showed that externals posses a width of categorization greater than the Internals, indicating that the latter were more cognitively active than their confidence, and attribution of success to internal factors were higher than externals. There were no significant differences between internals and externals in failure expectancy. Test pretest reliability coefficient was relatively high and statistically significant. The present study as such has demonstrated the construct validity and reliability of the personal lucus of control scale.
