The Effect of colour Cues on the Achievement of Kuwaiti Pupils Learning English As a Foreign Language(In English)

Auther : Abdulla Dannan & Mohammed Ghazzawi

This research aims at investigating the effect of colour cues on the achievement of Kuwaiti pupils learning English. An experimental group and a control group were taken from the 3rd year pupils (boys & girls) at intermediate schools. A Unit of the 3rd yearbook of the Crescent English Course, usually given in one month, was used as an instructional material. The new vocabulary and structures in the Unit were colored in red. The colored material was given to the experimental group, whereas the control group was given the black and white one, in which the whole book is printed. An achievement test on the unit was designed and proved to be valid and reliable.

The test was administered as a pretest and posttest. Analysis of results has shown that the pupils who used the colour-coded material achieved higher scores than those who used the black and white one. This difference was not statistically significant. Nevertheless, the researchers recommended that more studies should be done considering the age and the level of the learners, the size of the sample, and the amount of instructional material.
