Parents Education, Parents work Family Size, Housing Status Availability of Educational and Cultral Materials

Auther : Mohammed H. Furaihat & Ahmed S. Audeh

This study aimed at exploring the effect of family factors (parent’s education, parent’s work, family size, housing status, availability of educational and cultural materials) on the children reading readiness.

To achieve this goal a study sample representing children of various educational, economical, and social backgrounds was chosen and tested. Four basic reading readiness components were tested, i.e. acquisition of vocabulary, meaning comprehension, auditory and visual recognition.

Analysis of the gathered data revealed the existence of variation among children in the level of their reading readiness ascribed to the above mentioned family variables. This confirms what other studies have shown in regard to the significance of parent’s education level and their ability to interact language-wise, correctly and knowledgeably with their children. This also confirms what studies have concluded concerning the effect of the presence of audio-visual stimuli on the child language acquisition and their reading readiness.

The study also showed the positive effect of each reading readiness components on the other components separately and/or collectively.

It was, also shown that these family factors are by and large predictive of the children performance in the reading-readiness test.
