The Relationship between mid-term examination scores and the Final examination scores in the General Secondary school Certificate in the State of Kuwait (First Session,1984/85)

Auther : Ragaa Abou-Allam & Fathi Al-Deeb

In the year 1984/85, the Ministry of Education in Kuwait issued a new decree for the General Certificate examination. According to this decree, 25% were allotted to the final examination. Some questions arose as a result of the implementation of the new decree concerning the objectivity of assigning mid-term scores and the validity of these scores in predicting the performance of the students at the final examination.

The study aimed at answering four questions about the relationship between the scores of the students in mid-term examination and the final examination in the different school subjects in the two sections of the General Secondary Certificate, namely, the Literary and the Science sections.

The sample of the study constituted of all the regular students who entered the General Certificate Examination in the first session, 1984/85, according to the new decree. The total number of the sample amounted to 10995 students,of whom 6079 students were in the Science Section and 4916 students were in the Literary Section.

The data collected wee entered into the computer and statistical analyses were performed according to the classificatory variables of the study.

The results indicated that all correlation coefficients between mid-term examination scores and the final examination scores were significant at the 1% level significance. Some of these coefficients were high enough to give significant coefficient of determination. The results also indicated that for both sections the means of the scores of some subjects in the mid-term examination were significantly higher than the mean of the final examination scores while the means of some other subjects were higher in the final examination.
