Educational Opportunities & Selection to Secondary Education in Egypt

Secondary education plays a vital role in achieving the educational goals of the society. Nevertheless, the lack of resources in Egypt makes it difficult to enroll all students of secondary school age. Therefore, Egypt adopts and implements certain criteria to select some students to their schools.

Achieving the object of equal educational opportunities. The paper also examines the relationship between social and educational background of the family and the selection to academic, vocational and technical secondary schools.

A sample of 450 boys and 250 girls enrolled in the first grade of different secondary schools in two: - Tanta (in lower Egypt) and Souhag (in upper Egypt) - was questionnaire. The study reveals that there in statistically significant relationship between selection to secondary in Egypt and socio-economic and educational background of the family. It also shows that such a background affects the academic achievement of the students. These conclusions would seem to apply equally to both sexes.

The study suggests that there is a need for more academic research related to the organization, curriculum and guidance in secondary education.
