English as a University Requirement at Kuwait University opinions of student-teachers in the Faculty of Education (In English)

Auther : Najat Al-Mutawa

English-language courses constitute part of the compulsory requirements in Kuwait University. The study investigates the student-teachers opinions towards learning English in the Faculty of Education.

Two types of students are admitted to the Faculty, namely the graduates of secondary schools (SSC) and graduates of teachers training institutes (TTI). One of the objectives of the investigation was to elicit and compare the trainees opinions, in the light of their pre-university qualifications.

The responses indicate poor acquisition of such skills as reading, writing, listening, with the speaking difficulties being the predominant problem. This may explain why a substantial number of students did not find TEFL enjoyable.

The paper also reviews the factors that may lead to the various opinions of students. Finally, some suggestions are presented to improve the status of English in the Faculty and to encourage positive attitudes towards its study.
