Visual Discrimination and its Relation to Reading Ability of Primary School Children

Auther : Mohammed R. Eassa

The present study aims at studying the developmental aspect of the visual discrimination ability. It also explores the discrepancy between poor readers and normal pupils on this ability. Verbal Visual Discrimination Test was administred to a sample of 1497 primary school pupils, 71 of whom were classified by their teachers as poor readers. Results showed non- significant differences related to sex and educational zone.Statistically significant differences have been depicted between poor readers and normal ones. ANOVA indicates significant differences related to being in a higher class . However, no interaction effect has been found, implying accepting the main effect hypothesis. Regression analysis has shown reading level as the most important variable in explaining the variance in visual descrimination ability. Results are discussed and recommendation cited.
