An Evaluation of some aspects of first Intermediate Grade Informatics Curriculum in Kuwait

Auther : Soad A. Al-Ferieh

Within the framework of a project to introduce computers in the Kuwaiti intermediate schools (ages 10 - 14 years), a course entitled Informatics was initiated in four schools for girls. The first intermediate grade course consists of four units: Let us play, Let us draw, Let us write, and Let us think with Logo. The students used a student text written in terms of work sheets and flash cards. Fifteen trained teachers were in charge of teaching the 466 students in these schools. A teacher guide is used to guide them in their class work.

This research aims at evaluating this first intermediate grade Informatics curriculum through: (a) the teachers opinions about the Student Textbook and the Teacher Guide, (b) the students opinions and perceptions about the two units they have already studied, i.e., the games and the drawing units, (c) the students theoretical and practical achievement in the Drawing unit. Questionnairs, interviews and an achievement test were administered.

The results showed positive attitudes from the teachers, great satisfaction and enthusiastic reactions by the students. Furthermore, a very good level of achievement on the theoretical and practical parts of the achievement test was reached by the students.

Recommendations are given to contribute to revising and developing the dimensions of the project till it reaches its dissemination stage which is planned to occur by 2002/2003.
