The Ability of Arabic Lanuage Department (College of Education) students to use different Methods for text Analysis: An Evaluative Study

The study is an attempt to explore the ability of Arabic Language Department Students to analyse the literary text, through developing an objective scale for text - analysis. The main questions of the study are:

1 - What are the main core contents of the text for analysis and appreciation?

2 - To what extent can we identify the ability of Arabic language Department students to implement text analysis?

3 - Do significant differences exist in text analysis due to the method used (subjective analysis - directive analysis - criterion referenced analysis)?

The sample consists of 284 students in the Arabic Language Department in the College of Education (Kafr Al-sheikh), Tanta University. A literary text is chosen according to specified criteria, and given to groups are identified according to question # 3 stated above. Findings show that the third group (criterion referenced group) prove to be the last, indicating that students cannot identify the main core contents of the text to be analysed. The study, thus, identifies those core contents of the literary text to be: ideas, meanings, affection, imagination, music, words, style, expressive images.
