The Role of Adult Education in the Aspirations of Vocational Mobility in the Sultanate of Oman

Auther : Mohammed E. Mahrouse

This Study aimed to explore the concept of adult education, its positions and goals in Omani society. In addition, the study aimed to determine the effects of the variables of adult education on the aspirations of vocational mobility among students in the adult education in the Sultanate of Oman.

The data was collected from a sample of the study comprised of (226) adult learners: (105) male adult students, and (121) female adult students from the Omani program of adult education.

In order to investigate the relationships between the aspirations of vocational mobility and the (seven) other variables Multiple Regression Analyses of Variance were used. The variables examined included: socioeconomic background, sex, age, level of educational achievement within adult education, the type of educational activities for adults, previous vocational training, work experience, expectations of vocational promotion, and earning aspirations.

The analysis showed the following major findings:

- The educational achievement within schooling and formal adult education has important implications for some improvements in the educational composition of the Omani population.

- The variables with the greatest impact on the aspirations of vocational promotion were socioeconomic background and the number of years of previous work experience. At the same time, the effects of adult education as measured by the level of the educational achievement and the type of educational activities on the aspirations of vocational promotion were found to be insignificant.

- Adult education in the form of level educational achievement appears to contribute directly to the aspirations of earnings.

Thus, the variables of adult education and work experience are the best predictors of the aspirations of vocational mobility in the Sultanate of Oman.

The present study suggested that adult education programmes in the Sultanate of Oman should be developed, and curricula, particulary at the third level of adult education should be vocationalized. Vocational and training courses among the adult educated workers in the labour market will be useful to aspirations of vocational promotion.
