Predictive value of Admission Criteria in King Faisal University

Auther : Abdullah Omar Alnajjar

The successive increase in the number of school output has put pressure on universities and colleges in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (AlGhamidi, 1998). In the nineteen seventies, students could register in the specialization they choose. Currently, universities are working hard to develop admission tests and criteria that satistfy social demands and optimize students aptitude and university placement capacity.

The present study aims at evaluating the predictive value of the admission criteria used by King Faisal University (KFU) by answering questions:

- Is there a correlation between school examination scores and KFU admission test?

- Does any of these scores correlate with students Grade Point Average (GPA)?

- Can the GPA of university applicants be predicted?

- Is there a correlation between academic achievement and sex (male/female)?

The results obtained from the present study show that, generally, school test scores and the scores from KFU admission test are the most important factors in determining the student GPA in university study. The domain of students specialization at school in terms of Literature/Science may have an effect on students university performance. There is a correlation between school test scores, university admission test, and GPA. There is a correlation between Literature/Science specialization at school, university admission test and GPA. The study recommends the use of school test scores in addition to the university admission test in placing university applicants. There are other factors which may help predict university students academic achievement such as personality tests, interviews, and the students school general record.
