The Effetc of studying theoretical Issues of Science on Hashemite University Students Understanding of the Nature of Science

This study investigated the level of the fourth year students of the Hashemite University understanding of the nature of science in general, and its four components: assumptions, methods, knowledge, and scientists behavior. It also investigated the effect of the students level of study (first/fourth) and major, on such understanding.

The sample of the study consisted of (265) students, and a valid, reliable test consisting of (60) items was used for the purpose of this study.

To answer the questions of the study, the means and standard deviations of the scores of the test as a whole and its sub-tests were calculated. In addition, MANOVA followed by univariate f- tests was conducted.

The results revealed that the students understanding of the nature of science was less than 50%. In addition, the level of understanding of the first year students was less than 50% in assumptions, processes, and products of science. As for the fourth year students, their level of understanding of scientific processes and products was less than 50%.

The results also revealed that the level of understanding of the fourth year students of the nature of science as a whole is significantly (\alpha \leq 0.05) more than the level of understanding of the first year students, especially in the processes and the products of science.

It was recommended that more emphasis should be given to the nature of science while teaching science either at school or university.
