Relationship between Academic Achievement and Proficiency in Arabic as A Second Language
Auther : Rashid A. Addeweesh
This study discusses the relationship between academic achievement and proficiency in Arabic of 125 international graduate students who successfully completed the postgraduate diploma program in the Arabic Language Institute at King Saud University.
The academic achievement was measured by the subjects cumulative grade point averages (CGPAs) in the program, and the language proficiency was measured by the Arabic standardized test for which they sat before their admission to the program.
The partial correlation coefficient showed that the subjects CGPAs correlated significantly with their standardized test scores. It also showed significant correlations between the subjects CGPAs and their scores in two subcomponents of the standardized test, namely, structures and grammar, and reading comprehension. Moreover, the analysis revealed a significant correlation between the subjects CGPAs and their previous academic achievement as measured by their bachelors CGPAs.
Also, the multiple regression technique was used. It revealed that structures and grammar, and previous academic achievements are significant predictors of the subjects academic achievement.
The study also included other related variables, which were analyzed and discussed in order to determine their relationship with academic achievement.
