Optimism, Pessimism, and some Psychological Variables for a sample of Umm Al-Qura University Students

The aim of the present study was to explore the relationship between optimism, pessimism, loneliness, death anxiety and socioeconomic status. A sample of 240 volunteers in Umm Al-Qura University students (160 males, 80 females) were recruited. Their ages ranged from 19yrs to 28yrs. Optimism - Pessimism Inventory, Death Anxiety Scale, Loneliness Scale and Locus Of Control Scale were administered. Results indicate:

- Significant correlation was obtained between optimism and both loneliness, death anxiety, locus of control (-ve), and pessimism (+ve).

- No significant correlation was obtained between optimism and pessimism on one hand and socioeconomic status on the other hand.

- Significant correlation was obtained between optimism and pessimism (-ve).

- No significant differences were obtained between males and females on pessimism.

Finally the variables predicting optimism were loneliness, locus of control, death anxiety and socioeconomic status. The variables predicting pessimism were locus of control, loneliness, death anxiety and socioeconomic status.

The study findings were discussed in the light of previous studies.
