Evaluation of Special Education programs at Arabian Gulf University

Auther : Khalid I. Al-Alawi

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of special education programs offered at the Arabian Gulf University from graduated students points of view. A questionnaire is administered to 93 students graduated (with a higher diploma and a Master degree) between the academic years 1986/87 - 1998/99. The major findings indicate that 36.6% of the respondents are pursuing their higher studies (i.e. Masters and Ph. D.), whereas 63.4% of the respondents are working in their field of specialization, 1.1% of the later are working in other fields at the time of the survey. Findings also show that the programs have prepared the students to conduct research according to the proper methodology. Moreover, the programs have encouraged students to develop the services provided for children with special needs in Arabian Gulf communities in general and in their local communities in particular. On the other hand, the study points out some shortages about the programs, such as, the misorganization of semester course schedule; shortage of staff; and lack of follow - up program graduates. As of the scientific advantages of most courses, the students rate their response between high and very high upon both programs. Also the students state their high level of satisfaction about some elements of the programs; i.e. the career and cognitive development and staff-student relationship. Finally, the students suggest some useful recommendations in order to improve the special education programs, such as, concentration on the practical side rather than the theoretical one; the centers and institutions for children with special needs in the community making use of the students research findings; and the possibility of revising the contents of some courses in the programs.
